Here's a glossary of common paranormal terms in alphabetical order.

 

  • Age Regression: The process of going back to a previous time in your current life through the use of hypnosis.
  • Akashic Record: A chart of a person’s past lives, future lives, and parallel lives.
  • Apparition- Another word for ghost; The appearance of a ghostlike figure.
  • Astral Projection: Projecting one’s consciousness into the spirit world.
  • Automatic Writing: A method of communication with the other side that involves using a normal writing instrument and paper. The automatic writer allows a spirit to control the pen and what is drawn or written on the paper.
  • Autonographist: Professional automatic writer.
  • Channeler: A person who allows a spirit to temporarily possess his or her body in order for the spirit to be able to communicate with the living.
  • Channeling Board: A tool used for communication with the other side. Also known as a Ouija board or talking board.
  • Clairalience: The ability to use smell to receive a spirit’s message.
  • Clairambience: The ability to use taste to receive a spirit’s message.
  • Clairaudience: The ability to hear sounds to receive a spirit’s message.
  • Clairsentience: The feeling or sensing of a spirit’s message.
  • Clairvoyance: The ability to see objects or events that others can’t.
  • Collective Apparition: An apparition that is seen simultaneously by multiple witnesses.
  • Discarnate: Spirit or ghost – having no material body or form.
  • Doppelganger: The word doppelganger comes from the German Doppelgaenger, literally meaning "double-goer." Doppelgangers are also linked if not similar to crisis apparitions.
  • Ectoplasm: Also known as Ecto-mist, vapor, ghostly mist. : The term was originally used to describe the substance that oozed from spirit mediums during a séance from days gone by. It is now associated and referred to as a mist or fog, and it usually displays a swirl effect within a vaporous cloud.
  • Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP): A term used to describe the noises and voices that are recorded on traditional audio or videotape, but that aren’t necessarily audible to the human ear -- these are often believed to be voices from the other side.
  • EMF, Electromagnetic Field, Electromagnetism: A force given off by electric charges; found in anything that uses electricity. Some believe spikes in electromagnetism can be tied to paranormal activity.
  • Entity: A disembodied consciousness commonly referred to as a ghost, spirit, demon, etc.
  • Extrasensory Perception (ESP): An awareness of outside happenings or information not attained through the normal human senses.
  • FLIR- Stands for Forward Looking Infra Red. It is a thermal camera; the camera translates heat signatures into images.
  • Hi-8: A kind of portable video-tape camcorder.
  • Hypnotherapy: The treatment of an ailment through the use of hypnosis.
  • Intelligent haunting (also known as a classic or traditional haunting) : a haunting in which a spiritual entity is aware of the living world and interacts with or responds to it. Ghost hunters and paranormal writers say that such a ghost or spirit may be able to communicate with the living, not just by talking, but by moving inanimate objects such as furniture or toys.
  • IR light: Infra-Red light; this is what powers night vision capabilities.
  • ITC: Instrumental Trasncommunication. This term traces its roots to 1901, when a U.S. scientist made a recording of "conjured spirits" while visiting a shaman in
  • Siberia. German physics professor Ernst Senkowski later coined the term "instrumental transcommunication" (ITC), to refer to the use of modern technical devices such as audio recorders, radios, and televisions to communicate with realms outside of our known physical realm.
  • K-2 Meter: A device similar to an EMF detector, specially calibrated for paranormal investigations, that measures magnetic fields. Some believe it can be used to train a spirit to intensify its magnetic field as a form of communication.
  • Matrixing: The tendency for people to interpret sensory input as something familiar or more easily understood and accepted.
  • Medium, Sensitive, Psychic, or Empath : A person that can sense energies and emotions of those dead or alive, and/or is sensitive to electrical fields around people and entities, and is able to interpret and understand said things. A person who has a special gift and believes he or she can act as a bridge between the world of the living and the other side.
  • Metaphysics: A field of study dedicated to the nature of reality; an underlying philosophical or theoretical principle.
  • Mini DV: A small digital video recorder that records.
  • Orbs: Also known as spears, globules, balls of light, and globes. Spherical image or light, usually translucent or white, though sometimes reddish or bluish, which inexplicably registers on film and videotape. They act and move in unusual or erratic patterns  not similar to dust or bugs or other normal explinations, and are thought to be spirits or ghosts.
  • Paranormal: A term used to describe unusual activity that involves ghosts, apparitions, spirits, hauntings, poltergeists, monsters, etc. This term defines anything for which there is no scientific explanation.
  • Parapsychology: The study of phenomena, real or supposed, that appear inexplicable on presently accepted scientific theories.
  • Past-Life-Regression: The act of using trance or hypnosis to visit former lives.
  • Physical Mediumship: A form of mediumship in which the spirit communicates using both the physical energies and consciousness of the medium.
  • Place Memories: Refers to a location that captures energy and uses it to record an image of an event that once happened there and later replays it.
  • Planchette: A pointing device used in conjunction with a Ouija board.
  • Poltergeist: Another word for ghost; in German it means noisy ghost.
  • Progression Hypnotherapy: The act of visiting future lives through the use of hypnosis.
  • PSI: A term used to describe psychic ability or power.
  • Psychic: A person who uses empathic feelings to tap into nonphysical forces.
  • Psychokinesis:(literally "mind-movement") or PK is The ability to move objects using only one’s mind.It refers to the psionic ability to influence the behavior of matter by mental intention (or possibly some other aspect of mental activity) alone.
  • Psychosomatics: A field of study dedicated to the idea that the medical health of a person’s body is related to that person’s mind and emotions
  • Reincarnation: The idea that a soul can be reborn into a new human body.
  • Residual Haunting: A ghost that is trapped in a continuous loop. Many apparitions are always viewed repeating the same motions or scenes. Usually these ghosts pay little or no attention to the observer and go through the motions of an event that occurred in the past. These are also known as "time traps"; Said to be a psychic imprint of an incident in the past that is repeatedly played out and witnessed by someone living.
  • Spirit Box/Ghost Box/Frank's Box: Basically a modified radio that plays white noise; it is thought that ghosts are able to communicate through this white noise static.
  • Spirit: Electromagnetic entities in the forms of orbs, mist, vortexes, or shadows, which are the signature of a once-living person who has returned to a specific location. Their nature is interactive as opposed to residual.
  • Spirit Communicator: A spirit or ghost that uses a medium in order to communicate with someone either verbally or visually.
  • Spirit Operator: A spirit or ghost that uses a medium to physically manipulate something on earth.
  • Telepathy: The process of communicating from mind to mind (or spirit to spirit, to be more precise) without using a physical mechanism (such as voice, telephone, email, etc.)
  • Trance Mediumship: A form of mediumship in which the medium shares his or her energy with a spirit through the use of trance.
  • Vortex: A tornado-like mass of air, water, or energy that spins around very fast, creating a vacuum to pull objects into its empty center. It can varies in size and length when moving. They are readily confused with a speeding orb when they slow down and take on a straight and narrow appearance.
  • White Noise: A static noise produced by radios containing all audible frequencies of vibration; some believe entities can communicate through these frequencies.
