Cryptozoology

INTRODUCTION:

Cryptozoology is defined as the study of cryptids, or species of creatures  whose existence has not been substantiated; as well as the study of creatures thought to be extinct, that no longer exist. We're talking about anything from Bigfoot, Nessy, and the Chupacabra, to things like Tasmanian Tigers and dinosaurs etc.

The coining of the word cryptozoology is often attributed to zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans, though Heuvelmans attributes coinage of the term to the late Scottish explorer and adventurer Ivan T. Sanderson. Heuvelmans argued that cryptozoology should be undertaken with scientific rigor, but with an open-minded, interdisciplinary approach. He also stressed that attention should be given to local, urban and folkloric sources regarding such creatures, arguing that while often layered in unlikely and fantastic elements, folktales can have grains of truth and important information regarding undiscovered organisms.

LCP AND CRYPTOZOOLOGY

LCP has always wanted to set up a Bigfoot investigation, as there are many reports in and around our home town location. Local stories and reports of Bigfoot go back a long time in the Lincoln and Otero County area, and in fact all over New Mexico. Native American folklore is dotted with tales of a big hairy man creature which was occasionally spotted and terrorized the locals. The Mescalero Apache call the creature 'kensah' in there language; I also remember reading somewhere once of a different word used to name the creature, which meant "the snow bringer" in their language,  as sightings of the creature increase around the first snow of the season. They have even built their houses up off the ground on stilts to keep themselves out of the creature's reach. The stories persist to this day; weather they hear the creature's high pitched screams, hear it walking through the forests and snapping branches, or come face to face with it in the woods or at their homes. Usually seen at night or late or early in the day, residents of Mescalero and Ruidoso alike have reported the creature coming up to their houses and peering through the windows, even digging in their trash. Sightings even stretch out towards Capitan, as LCP member Kori has seen the creature himself twice before, on Coradutton Road while on his way home in late July a few years ago. We have spoken to several other witnesses as well, including a friend who was with kori during one of his sightings. Local narrations of the creature resemble the typical Bigfoot description; a 7-10 feet tall, hairy bipedal primate, with long brown hair that's white underneath when you see it up close; like its fur is actually white but its really dirty. It has big claws and smells bad.

LIST OF MOST COMMON CRYPTIDS;

THEIR LEGENDS AND WHAT THEY ARE OR WHAT THEY COULD BE

† Bigfoot †

The scientific community at large discounts the existence of Bigfoot and considers the creature to be a combination of folklore, misidentification, and hoaxes, rather than a legitimate animal, in part because some scientists estimate large numbers necessary to maintain a breeding population, which they claim doesn't seem to exist, EVEN THOUGH thousands of sightings are reported every year worldwide. Bigfoot is described in reports as a large hairy ape-like creature, ranging between 6–10 feet tall, weighing in excess of 500 pounds, and covered in dark brown or dark reddish hair, or in some cases for different kinds of Bigfoot like the yeti, white hair. Alleged witnesses have described large eyes, a pronounced brow ridge, and a large, low-set forehead; the top of the head has been described as rounded and crested, similar to the sagittal crest of the male gorilla. Bigfoot is commonly reported to have a strong, unpleasant smell by those who claim to have encountered it. The enormous footprints for which it is named have been as large as 24 inches long and 8 inches wide. While most casts have five toes—like all known apes—some casts of alleged Bigfoot tracks have had numbers ranging from two to six. Some have also contained claw marks, making it more likely that a portion of those came from known animals such as bears, which have five toes and claws. Some proponents have also claimed that Bigfoot is omnivorous and mainly nocturnal. Some
believe that Bigfoot could be a relict population of Gigantopithecus, an extinct primate, fossils of which have been found; or perhaps Bigfoot is related to or evolved from some other thought-to-be-extinct species of primate that once existed.

† Chupacabra †

In Spanish, Chupacabra literally means "goat sucker;" from the words
chupar "to suck" and cabra "goat." It is a legendary cryptid rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. It is associated more recently with sightings of an allegedly unknown animal in Puerto Rico (where these sightings were first reported), Mexico, and the United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities. The name comes from the animal's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, especially goats. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Eyewitness sightings have been claimed from Puerto Rico to as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile. It seems that sightings began and have persisted/grown since the early 20th century.  Descriptions  of the Chupacabra vary:
The typical description of chupacabras is a reptile-like being, appearing to have leathery or scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back. This form stands approximately 3 to 4 feet tall, standing and hopping in a fashion similar to a kangaroo. This variety is said to have a dog or panther-like nose and face, a forked tongue, and large fangs. It is said to hiss and screech when alarmed, as well as leave behind a sulfuric stench. When it screeches, some reports assert that its eyes glow an unusual red which gives the witnesses nausea.
A different version of the chupacabras is described as being strange breed of wild dog. This form is mostly hairless and has a pronounced spinal ridge, unusually pronounced eye sockets, fangs, and claws. It is claimed that this breed might be an example of a dog-like reptile. Unlike conventional predators, the chupacabra is said to drain all of the animal's blood (and sometimes organs) usually through one to three holes in the shape of an upside-down triangle usually on the neck of its victim. LCP believes both versions of the creature exist, and we have our own theories as to what both kinds of chupacabra may be.

† Nessy and Champ †
Everyone has heard of the Loch Ness Monster, the sea monster reputed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. The most frequent speculation is that the creature represents a line of long-surviving plesiosaurs. Similar reports of supposed lake monsters span the globe, though its description varies from one account to the next. Popular interest and belief in the animal has fluctuated since it was brought to the world's attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings. The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a modern-day myth, and explains sightings as a mix of hoaxes and wishful thinking. Despite this, it remains one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology. The legendary monster has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie. Other names given to alleged living plesiosaurs around the world are: Champ, Ogopogo or NaitakaSalish, Chessie, Slimy-Slim, Caddy, Morgawr, Morag, Kussie, Bunyip, Mannie, Memphre, Sicopogo, One-Eye, Manipogo, Tag, Casper, Lizzie, Selma, Tessie, Whitey, Altamaha, Bessie, Claude, Pressie, Hodgee, Haitlik, Hanhuelito, Naitaka, Hodag, Tieholdtsodi, Mashenomak, Wakteexi, Sirrush, Vasuki, Vritra, The Hydra, The Kraken, Jormungard, Nidhogg, Zalyts, Capactli, Yulunjul, Julungul, and more.

† Living Dinosaurs †

In cryptozoology, living dinosaurs are hypothetical non-bird dinosaurs that survived the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event and continue to exist today. Living dinosaurs can also be used to denote Neornithes (modern birds), which are the only clade of dinosaurs to have survived the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event, apart from controversial reports of Paleocene dinosaurs or extinct species of dinosaurs that are claimed to exist today. Such sightings are not as rare as you might think. They have been reported in many places from ancient times to today. Sightings span the globe. Here are a few examples: The Ngoubou is a purportedly surviving ceratopsian-like cryptid in the savanna region of Cameroon. It is said to have six horns, and fights elephants for land, despite its smaller size (about the size of an ox, according to locals). Another is the Muhuru, an alleged relict non-avian dinosaur that has been reported from the jungles of Kenya. It is described as a heavily-armored beast with thick bone plates on its back and a club-like tail. Other reports tell of giant flying lizard-birds, like the pterodactyl. Some of these accounts describe flying creatures that resemble known birds, such as eagles, but in sizes unimaginable, while others look very much like the supposedly long-extinct pterodactyls/pteranodons.

† Jersey Devil †

The Jersey Devil sometimes called the Leeds Devil, is a legendary creature or cryptid said to inhabit the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey. The creature is often described as a flying biped with hooves, but there are many variations and descriptions. Most accounts of the Jersey Devil legend attribute the creature to a "Mother Leeds", a supposed witch, although the tale has many variations. According to one version, she invoked the devil while giving birth to her 13th child, and when the baby was born, it either immediately or soon afterward transformed into a devil-like creature and flew off into the surrounding pines. According to legend, while visiting the Hanover Mill Works to inspect his cannonballs being forged, Commodore Stephen Decatur sighted a flying creature flapping its wings and fired a cannonball directly upon it to no effect. Joseph Bonaparte, eldest brother of Emperor Napoleon, is also said to have witnessed the Jersey Devil while hunting on his Bordentown, New Jersey estate around 1820. Throughout the 19th century, the Jersey Devil was blamed for livestock killings, strange tracks, and reported sounds. In the early 20th century, a number of people in New Jersey and neighboring states claimed to witness the Jersey Devil or see its tracks. Claims of a corpse matching the Jersey Devil's description arose in 1957. In 1960, the merchants around Camden offered a $10,000 reward for the capture of the Jersey Devil, even offering to build a private zoo to house the creature if captured.

† Moth Man †

The Mothman is a creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area of West Virginia from November 12, 1966, to December 1967. Most observers describe the Mothman as a man-sized creature with large reflective red eyes and large wings. The creature was sometimes reported as having no head, with its eyes set into its chest. A number of hypotheses have been presented to explain eyewitness accounts, ranging from misidentification and coincidence, to paranormal phenomena and conspiracy theories. Sightings of similar looking monsters have been reported in various other locations, though they vary in descriptions and may go by different names; such as the  old Native American tales of the Owl Man, also known as Big-Hoot.

† Flying Humanoids †

Flying Humanoids have been sighted all around the world, and throughout history; descriptions vary. Some appear just like normal humans, except they are flying with what appears to be bat-like wings. Other human looking creatures have no wings and seem to fly unaided. Some appear non-human, looking like robots, monsters, etc. People have reported hearing many different sounds during their sightings of these flying humanoids; everything from normal speech, robotic sounds, terrifying screams, hissing, rumbling like rockets or some type of engine, flapping like wings, even singing. Explanations for flying humanoids vary from case to case as do their descriptions; the posiblities are endless.

† Giant & Out-of-Place Animals †

*Giant Animals- Many of the cryptids in the giant category are not unknown species of creatures; most are well-known animals, but are only known to grow to certain proportions. Many people report seeing these known creatures in gigantic sizes, thought to be impossible, and are thus reported as cryptids, thought to be of myth, legend, and exaggeration. Fossil records show us that a fair amount of today's animals once grew to enormous sizes, it has been a very long time since this was so. Be it snakes, crocodiles/alligators, sharks, squids, spiders, among many more creatures.

*Out of Place Animals- There are various sightings around the world about animals which are out of place; animals known to exist, but are seen in places they should not exist. One example of this are the big black cats reportedly seen throughout England/Europe. Described as being the size of a large dog, these cats are always black and move in a unique manner. From the photos and videos caught, these big black felines resemble the build/anatomy and movements of a cheetah, or similar to the style of cats depicted in Egyptian art. Another example of out of place animals are the leopards seen in the south western United States and Mexico. Photo and video evidence of these felines has also been captured, weather they are traditional spotted leopards, or black panthers. There are many other out of place creatures found in the ocean; recently Arctic sharks have been found far upstream in rivers only 60 feet deep. The examples go on.

† Extinct Species †

One theory behind many cryptid cases is that the unidentified creatures people claim to exist are actually known animals which once existed and are thought to be extinct, but some have somehow managed to survive or evolve in small numbers found in niche groups/areas. This is a probable explanation not only for known extinct species, but for unknown extinct species as well; new spices are being found all the time, weather alive or extinct; we only know about a fraction of all the species that have ever lived on Earth. An example of this kind of cryptid is the coelacanth; a type of fish, coelacanth were believed to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period, until one was captured by a fisherman off the coast of Africa in 1938
